The L-P Class of 1956 Scholarship has been established to acknowledge and reward student academic success and leadership at the high school. Initial funding of the scholarship is derived from contributions by members of the Class of 1956 on the occasion of their 50th Class Reunion.
Application forms will be available in the Guidance Office after January 1 each year. The application will include a request for a brief summary of the applicant’s background and a one page typewritten essay in accordance with the requirements described on the Application Form. Completed applications are due in the Guidance Office by March 1 of each year.
The candidate shall be a graduating senior of L-P High School who has attended that school for at least two years, including the senior year, and who has attained an accumulated grade point average of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 grading scale.
The candidate shall have a record of participation in school and community activities, with great emphasis on leadership roles.
The candidate must be accepted for admission to attend a two or four year college or university.
Financial need is NOT a requisite for receipt of this scholarship and need not be demonstrated.
The scholarship recipient will be determined by a committee including appropriate members of the administrative, counseling and teaching staffs. When available to participate, a member of the Class of 1956 may also be included in the selection process.
The scholarship will be presented at the annual Senior Awards Night.
The one-year scholarship will be a minimum of $500, but will not exceed $1,000. Payment of the scholarship proceeds will be made in two installments to the college or university during the academic year immediately following graduation. Scholarship administration and funds disbursement is set up under the auspices of the L-P Foundation for Educational Enrichment.
The scholarship is not renewable.
If there are no qualified applicants in a given year, the scholarship will not be awarded.
Contributions from classmates and other interested persons are now being accepted by the LPHS Foundation. Checks should be made out to The LPHS Foundation and be specifically designated for the L-P Class of 1956 Scholarship.
You may mail your contribution to LPHS Foundation, P.O. Box 1325, LaSalle, IL 61301.
The LPHS Foundation web site can be found at www.lpfoundation.org. Our class and the Class of 1953 now have scholarship funds established under the auspices of the Foundation.
I am pleased to report on the mid-year status of our class scholarship fund. In January of this year we crossed the $10,000 total contributions mark and purchased a one-year Certificate of Deposit at Eureka Savings in the amount of $10,000. To date, that CD has earned $229.06 interest. In addition, there is $1,400 in the L-P Foundation Money Market account, so the total amount in our class fund is $11,629.06. The scholarship guidelines stipulate that only interest earnings may be used for an award, and also that the minimum amount of an award shall be $500. When the CD matures in January of 2010, we will determine how much total interest has been earned, but it is likely that the amount will be less than $500. Thus, it is probable that we will have to wait one more year, that being April 2011, before awarding our first scholarship. That will make it four years after the inception of our program, which is very commendable.
The total number of contributors to date is still small, so we continue to urge others to get involved in this worthy venture. Several of those who indicated they would support the program at the outset have still not come through with their first contribution. We recognize that we are still going through one of the worst economic meltdowns in our lifetimes, so that could be a contributing factor. However, we urge you to make this program a priority on your list of charitable organizations that you support. The amount of your contribution is not as important as getting on board and involved. An investment in the lives and careers of our college bound young people is among the best we can make. Once again, either contact me directly or go to the class web site, www.rhfalk.com/lphs, for details on making your contribution.
Thanks to each of you for your thoughtful consideration and support.

Last February, Jim Grisolano e-mailed me to ask if I would be "willing and available" to present our first LaSalle Peru High School Class of 1956 Scholarship. I was honored to be the first award presenter.
Working with LaSalle Peru High School Principal Deb Nelson, Guidance Counselor Ellen Entwistle and a Committee of LaSalle Peru High School administration, counseling and teaching members, four scholarship applications were read and reviewed. We voted by secret ballot to determine the worthy senior who would receive our scholarship.
The LaSalle Peru High School Awards Program was held on April 21, 2010 in the high school auditorium—a dignified and impressive event. It was my great honor to award our first LaSalle Peru High School Class of 1956 Scholarship in the amount of $500. to AMANDA COUTRE. She met all of our criteria, participated in school and community activities and exemplified leadership throughout her four years at LaSalle Peru High School.
Our Class can be proud to have achieved this goal in four short years. Many thanks to all classmates who participated and to all those who care to participate in the future. Jim Grisolano informed me that as of March 31, 2010, we have about $14,475. in our Foundation Scholarship certificate-of-deposit. Please go to: www.lpfoundation.org for more information regarding our fund.
